What is Kundalini Yoga
Yogi Bhajan brought the 5,000 year-old science of Kundalini Yoga to the United States in 1969. Prior to that time, it was kept a secret in India, practiced among a select few.
Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan is a blending of, and repetition of breath work, movement and postures, chanting and meditation, resulting in a general sense of relaxation and well-being. You do not have to be very flexible to do this yoga. The postures are doable for most people, can be modified and yet the results are powerful. Many exercises can be done in your chair!
We use three basic components to bring about the technical know-how to expand our mental faculties in order to bring about equilibrium:
- Breathing techniques to master your moods and process your feelings and emotions.
- Physical postures and exercises to stimulate the muscular, glandular, circulatory, and nervous systems to operate at full effectiveness.
- Sound and meditation techniques to direct your mind into alignment with the direction of your heart and soul and bring you into deep meditative states quickly.
Emphasizing the breath in combination with movement, mantra and music enhances rhythm and focus as the exercises strengthen and relax the body.
Kundalini Yoga focuses on uncoiling and moving the energy through the chakra system by stimulating the energy in the lower centers, and moving it to the higher centers. The uncoiling is the awakening of the unlimited potential that already exists in every human. Kundalini Yoga assists in eliminating negative habit patterns as it promotes balance and intuition to the energy of the mind and emotions so that we can be in control of ourselves rather than being controlled by our thoughts and feelings.
