About Kundalini Yoga: Awakening the Kundalini - the Energy in Our Spine

FIRST CHAKRA (MULADHARA CHAKRA)
The First Chakra is located at the base of the spine. The First Chakra has the quality of earth, and its color is red. It has to do with "me" habits: elimination, survival, self-centeredness, and depression. Associated physical problems: intestinal difficulties, sciatica, prostate. Emotional challenges: resentment, rigidity. When the First Chakra is working well, you feel grounded and confident.

SECOND CHAKRA (SVADISTHANA CHAKRA)
The Second Chakra concerns the sex organs. The Second Chakra has the quality of water, and its color is orange. It has to do with ego, patience, well being, being social, self-confidence, endurance, and taste. Associated physical problems: impotence, frigidity, diabetes, over-sexed, kidney and bladder problems. Emotional challenges: passionate manipulation, guilt. A person whose Second Chakra is in balance is creative and has a healthy sex life.

THIRD CHAKRA (MANIPURA CHAKRA)
The Third Chakra corresponds to the solar plexus/navel area where the nerve endings meet. This area houses the liver, gall bladder, spleen, stomach, small intestine. The Third Chakra has the quality of fire, and its color is yellow. Associated physical problems: ulcers, poor digestion, jaundice, hepatitis, gallstones, hypoglycemia. Emotional challenges: powerlessness, greed, doubt, anger, guilt, and jealousy. When the Third Chakra is in balance, it gives the courage to accomplish great deeds.

FOURTH CHAKRA (ANAHATA CHAKRA )
The Fourth Chakra corresponds to the heart, lungs, thymus gland. The Fourth Chakra has the quality of air, and its color is green. It has to do with compassion and love. Associated physical problems: cardio-vascular, arthritis, respiratory, stroke, hypertension. Emotional challenges: insensitivity, emotionally closed, passivity, sadness, fear, and attachment. When the Fourth Chakra is balanced, one experiences true love, kindness, and compassion.

FIFTH CHAKRA (VISHUDDHA CHAKRA)
The Fifth Chakra is associated with the throat center and the thyroid. The Fifth Chakra element is ether, and its color is light blue. Ether is the condition of space and time to allow something to exist; it is very subtle. It has to do with expression and creation. The Fifth Chakra is associated with the power of the word. It is here that we speak and create. The Fifth Chakra relates to physical conditions such as sore throat, voice problems, thyroid gland problems, and flu. Emotional challenges: stagnation, obsession, lack of expression, denial, and abruptness. A balanced Fifth Chakra brings creativity to fruition.

After the Fifth Chakra, the sixth, seventh and eighth are now beyond the elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether. There are no specific earth elements associated with the upper Chakras.

SIXTH CHAKRA (AJANA CHAKRA )
The Sixth Chakra is the third eye, or brow point, and its color is indigo. It relates to the pituitary gland, responsible for the secretion of serotonin. It is here that you reach the integrity and integration of the personality. You get a sense of intuition. Ida (left nerve channel, left nostril, moon energy), Pingala (right nerve channel, right nostril, energy of the sun), and shushmana (central spine channel) all come together - the three rivers of energy meet as one. The "third eye" gives you depth and dimension. Emotional challenges: confusion, depression. When the Sixth Chakra is in balance, the person realizes basic concepts without distortion.

SEVENTH CHAKRA (SAHASRARA CHAKRA)
The Seventh Chakra is associated with the Crown Chakra or the "tenth gate", the spiritual center of our physical body. It encompasses the top of the head, and most of the brain. The Seventh Chakra's color is violet. The pineal gland is a tiny piece of tissue located in the center of the brain, near the brain stem, above the place where the spinal cord and brain meet. The pineal gland produces melatonin, regulates levels of sex hormones, regulates sleep, and responds to light. Emotional challenges: grief, sleeplessness. If this center is balanced, the person has a direct connection with spirituality.

EIGHTH CHAKRA (AURA)
The Eighth Chakra is the place above your physical body, the electromagnetic field, and its color is white. The quality is radiance, your sense of being. It appears to be an oval or a circle. When you are spiritually or mentally ill, your radiance appears to be dimmed. When this circumvent field is strong and the other Chakras are aligned and functioning well, your presence is radiant, and seems to work and direct many of the forces in the universe to fulfill your desires and needs.
